South Carolina blows chance for back-to-back Super Bowls, while Manning sets league on fire |
||
COLUMBIA,
South Carolina- The night before the season opener South Carolina
owner Trevor Harless held a press conference. As is the case with defending
champions, during the course of the 2 hour question and answer session
it was revealed that Harless believed “that his team would repeat
as league champion, that they would capture their first division championship
since 1997, and that QB Peyton Manning would throw between 25 –
30 TD passes.” Each of the statements made were wrong and in some
cases way off base, but they were not all bad, for instance Manning had
30 TD passes in about the 12th week of the season Manning finished with
46 TD passes. “Wow I’d say I was a little off the mark when
I spoke of Manning before the season, maybe he heard what I said and used
it as motivation,” joked Harless.
The offseason is chance for teams to evaluate the talent on the team; it takes about 30 seconds to figure out the top 2 players on this team. QB Peyton Manning and RB Edgerrin James are absolutely locks to be offered two of the three guaranteed contracts for the team. The third and final contract will go to one of the young WR’s the team holds rights to either Andre Johnson or Chad Johnson will get the nod the only question is which one of them do the coaches prefer? “Chad is a great talent and would be a great piece to this puzzle, but Andre is more the type of receiver Peyton likes to throw to so well have to really get in and analyze what the best thing to do for our team,” states Harless. When remembering the season Harless quips, “There is 1 loss in all the years I’ve owned this team that really sticks in my craw.” The loss in question was the week 4 overtime loss to New Delhi. The game was right before Manning lit the fire underneath himself and started torching the leagues cornerbacks and safeties for all they were worth. With all the time spent reviewing losses, this team spends an equal amount of time analyzing wins, including those of the monumental variety, which was the case when they sat down and reviewed film of the season ending game against Austin. In that game Manning threw for 425 yards and 3 TD’s, as he led his team to a 20 point victory, 64-44. After that game Manning went into the film room and locked the door, when he came out 12 hours later he declared that he was mentally prepared for the rematch against the Stunners that would take place on his home field. One week later he was having a press conference to accept his MVP trophy and to answer questions about why the Scarecrows lost the playoff game to Austin. Harless later fumed, “We never should’ve been in that situation, if it weren’t for that damn game against New Delhi, and I’m so damn frustrated by the way our defense played in that game.” It just goes to show you that when you think you’re big time you might want to check your watch because your fifteen minutes might be getting ready to expire.
